Editorial: How Things Should Work

"This is how things should work."

It's not often you hear that phrase when talking about getting projects off the ground on our Central Coast. So it gives us great pride to reflect on the past week and point to not just one, but two news items which show us that sometimes right-minded people can actually bring some important and positive change to Monterey County without decades of in-fighting or election battles.

Our KSBW Editorial Board is pleased to congratulate the Big Sur Land Trust and the Monterey County Parks Department for finalizing arrangements to create Marks Ranch Park… a public park that will preserve hundreds of acres for families and outdoor enthusiasts for generations to come. It's a rare case of Monterey County land-use being handled without countless public hearings and endless debates from people trying to impose their own will on others. With no "body count" of winners and losers, Marks Ranch shows that committed people backed by a solid plan, can get things done.

And speaking of committed people, hats off to retired General William Gourley, along with the Veterans Administration, and top officers at the Monterey Presidio. This week they announced plans for a new 100,000 square foot health care facility to be built at the former Fort Ord. This facility is envisioned to be a center-point for active duty personnel in need of combat rehab, as well as to service the general health care needs of active duty military and retirees. This initiative is spectacular: it is certainly needed, and unquestionably deserved. Plans for the center were put together in just a few short months, once again a shining example of what can be accomplished with a good idea and a good plan.

To all involved with the veterans healthcare facility and with creating Marks Ranch Park: congratulations on a job well done. This is how things should work.
