SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Community colleges are bracing for midyear cuts after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Thursday he wanted to trim their budgets. The 110 California community colleges could lose out on more than $330 million.Cabrillo College would lose $4 million from its budget, which could mean layoffs and lost classes.
The cuts couldn't come at a worse time for community colleges like Cabrillo. Attendance is up more than 10 percent statewide, which reflects booming enrollment during tough economic times."For us, about 90 percent of our budget is staffing," said Cabrillo College president Brian King. "We've looked everywhere else, but when there's this magnitude, inevitably we have to look at staff as well."Pam Scott, a 39-year-old single mother with three children, said she is worried that all of the benefits she receives for being a student could be cut because the classes she needs to maintain her scholarship might not be there."I have the possibility of losing my scholarship for my housing," Scott said. "There's about a one-and-a-half year waiting list for housing, a four-year waiting list for the Section 8 housing, so it's possible if it goes through, I could be at risk for homelessness."Cabrillo College student body president Rebecca Villa Fana said she doesn't beliee the state budget should be balanced at the cost of students' education."People come to community college to get a higher education, to get a better-paying job," Villa Fana said. "What we're telling our community is we're not willing to invest in our present or in our future."The governor's budget does not call for an increase in community college fees, but that may be considered for the next budget. It is unknown how many or what kind of classes will be cut.
