MONTEREY, Calif. -- With summer coming, dermatologists are reminding people who love the outdoors to use sunscreen.
The American Academy of Dermatology did a survey recently, trying to gauge tanning attitudes. The survey found that most people understand the dangers of too much sun, but 81 percent of Americans still think they look good with a tan, 80 percent believe sunscreens should be used to tan without burning and only 57 percent agree that sunscreens should be used to avoid a tan altogether.
It's those attitudes that worry dermatologists. They say there is no such thing as a safe suntan. But there is a safe way to get the same results.
It's called a self-tanner, and it works as a spray-on process. It's a mist that goes on perfectly even, perfectly uniform," Sahara Sun Salon spokeswoman Gina Giammanco said.
"The substance they are usually spraying on or are using in rub-on products is called dyhydroxy accetane, DHA, and it's a sugar. And when it makes contact with the skin, it simply turns brown. It is a completely safe product," dermatologist Dr. Christopher Dannaker said.
But does it really work? Action News decided to send in one of its producers, Elena Picha, to give it a try.
Mystic Tan doesn't take long. Less than five minutes later, Picha walked out of the booth and was ready to head back to work. Six hours later, she was noticeably darker. And she's thrilled with the results.
"I actually think I will go back. I love it," Picha said.
But there are a few things you should know. It's not cheap. One session will cost $25, less if you buy a package. And the results are only temporary, lasting about a week to ten days. So if you want that bronzed glow all summer long, it will require an investment. And Sahara Sun in Monterey is the only place in the area that offers the Mystic Tan.
