MOVING TIPS FROM THE PROS:

1. 1. When moving with children, involve the children as much as possible. Prepare them in advance for the move and give them time to adjust to the idea. Allowing them to participate will give them a sense of responsibility and worth. Pictures of the new home and town will also help them get adjusted to the upcoming move.
2. 2. On moving day, keep items such as jewelry, cash, purses, wallets, credit cards and all necessary prescription medications with you rather than packing them in a box to be put on the moving truck.
3. 3. Be sure to properly prepare for the transportation of major appliances on move day. Depending on the item, special precautions may be required and it is your responsibility (not the moving company) to take care of these preparations yourself; hire an appropriate technician or request that the moving company make the arrangements for you at an additional charge.
4. 4. A pre-move survey is needed to determine the approximate cost of a move and the amount of van space your household goods will occupy. An accurate estimate cannot be given without a visual survey of the goods to be moved. There is no charge for the estimate and it is recommended that you get one from at least two or three different moving companies.
5. 5. Lightweight clothing – sweaters, shirts, blouses, and lingerie – may be left in the drawers. Do not fill drawers with heavy items such as books, table linens or sheets which can damage the piece of furniture during transit. Be careful NOT to leave fragile items, money, jewelry, watches or other valuables in the drawers – as well as anything that might spill or leak.
6. 6. When doing your own packing – remember that heavy items such as books should go in small boxes and light items such as pillows should go in large boxes.
