Giants Sign Reliever Affeldt

POSTED: 1:06 pm PST November 17, 2008

(Sports Network) - The San Francisco Giants signed left- handed relief pitcher Jeremy Affeldt to a two-year contract on Monday.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Affeldt went 1-1 with a 3.33 earned run average in a club-high 74 appearances for Cincinnati last season. He struck out 80 batters in 78 1/3 innings and posted a 2.23 ERA over his final 34 outings.

"Though just 29, Jeremy brings a solid veteran presence to our bullpen," said Giants general manager Brian Sabean. "There is no doubt he has been able to shoulder a heavy workload. He has been to the postseason and will help bridge the gap between our young and talented starting staff and our closer, Brian Wilson, who is one of the best in the game. We are excited to have Jeremy as a Giant."

The 29-year-old Affeldt broke into the majors in 2002 with Kansas City, and has also pitched for the Colorado Rockies. In seven major-league seasons he has compiled a 26-28 record with 18 saves and a 4.55 ERA in 360 appearances (42 starts).
