Mariners End Awful Season With Sweep Of A's

POSTED: 4:53 pm PDT September 28, 2008

(Sports Network) - Yuniesky Betancourt's two-run triple in the fifth inning gave the Seattle Mariners a 4-3 win over the Oakland Athletics to sweep the final series of the year at Safeco Field.

R.A. Dickey surrendered three runs on six hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings, with two strikeouts, to earn the victory for Seattle (61-101). J.J. Putz struck out the side in the ninth for his 15th save of the season.

"I think we definitely ended on a good note," Mariners outfielder Raul Ibanez said. "(We) swept the series and did it together as a team. (The season) ended on a good note."

Ichiro Suzuki scored twice and had two hits, and Kenji Johjima went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Seattle.

Josh Outman (1-2) took the loss for Oakland after allowing four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits and a walk in six innings. He also had five strikeouts.

"We had our chances there and didn't get it done," Athletics manager Bob Geren said. "(The) bullpen came in, held it, gave us a chance, but we couldn't scratch that one across we needed."

Travis Buck homered and had three hits while Chris Denorfia drove in the other two runs for Oakland (75-86), which ended its season on a five-game losing streak.

The Mariners overcame a one-run deficit in the fifth. Luis Valbuena reached on a bunt single, and Suzuki got to first on Outman's throwing error. Betancourt plated both the runners with a triple to right, giving Seattle a 4-3 advantage.

The A's loaded the bases in the sixth and seventh, but came up empty. Jeff Baisley flied out to end the sixth, and Roy Corcoran fanned Denorfia to complete the top of the seventh.

Buck led off the game with a home run to right. Ryan Sweeney singled a couple batters later and Jack Cust worked a walk. Denorfia followed with a two-run double to give the A's a three-run cushion.

Seattle also manufactured a run in the first. Suzuki led off with a double, moved to third on a line out to left and scored on Ibanez's groundout to second. Matt Tuiasosopo added an RBI groundout in the second.

Game Notes

Despite the loss, Oakland won the season series 10-9...Seattle finished with the worst record in the American League, but will have the second pick in the 2009 MLB Draft since the Washington Nationals finished 59-102, 1 1/2 games behind the Mariners.
