MONTEREY, Calif. -- Firefighters were monitoring a diesel oil spill in Monterey Bay as of noon Friday. The spill is located between the Naval Postgraduate School and Seaside. There is no information available about threats to humans or animals.
The Coast Guard said they discovered the spill just off Del Monte Beach near the Naval Postgraduate School, but the smell of diesel stretched from Del Monte Beach to the Seaside city limits. The spill was not major, officials said. The Coast Guard got the initial call Friday morning from someone who reported smelling diesel near Delmonte Beach. They said they investigated the spill and found only a light sheen of diesel, but they said they couldn't determine its source or the amount of diesel that had spilled into the bay.Monterey police were dispatched to the beach and warned the few beachgoers about the spill.Sea otters can be particularly vulnerable to diesel spills, biologists said, and the diesel could make them sick and, in some cases, kill them. The executive director of the Sea Otter Project said there were reports of injured animals.A warning was issued by officials to stay out of the water.
