SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- A coalition of Democratic grassroots organizations descended upon the Santa Cruz City Council meeting Tuesday to call on the council to support its resolution to impeach President George Bush and essentially eliminate his entire cabinet.
Each organization had adopted its own resolution to impeach the president and Vice President Dick Cheney as well as remove Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Attorney General John Ashcroft and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice from office, representatives told the council.
The groups also called for the disempowerment of the Patriot Act, which President Bush signed shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The activists said they had no intention of stopping with local government. They have asked Assemblyman John Laird, D-Santa Cruz, and Sen. Bruce McPherson, R-Santa Cruz, to support the resolutions in the state Legislature, U.S. Rep. Sam Farr, D-Carmel, to support them on the House floor, and Sens. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to support them on the Senate floor in Washington.
The groups say they are still angry about the president's decision to go to war with Iraq and claim he has deceived the American public.
