UCSC Fraternity Brothers Facing Misdemeanor Charges

A trial date has been set for two University of California, Santa Cruz fraternity brothers charged with killing and cooking a koi they allegedly stole from a campus pond earlier this year.

The Santa Cruz County District Attorney's Office reported that Matthew Cox and Casey Loop will appear in court Feb. 9, 2004, to face misdemeanor grand theft and malicious mischief charges for the May 20 stunt.

Cox and Loop were members of the Delta Omega Chi fraternity, which was taking part in MTV's "Fraternity Life" reality show. They reportedly came forward and confessed to stealing "Midas," a 20-pound koi that was a popular attraction in a pond at the university's Porter College.

The grand theft charges stem from the value of the fish, which was estimated to be in the hundreds of dollars. The university quickly purchased a replacement koi worth about $700.

Filming for "Fraternity Life" began in April and wrapped in early June. The UCSC season is the second season of the MTV reality show, which follows the lives of fraternity brothers and pledges. The first season of the show took place at the University of Buffalo in New York. MTV has not announced when the UCSC season will begin airing.
