Firefighters made progress Thursday against a wildfire that burned more than 400 acres in the Los Padres National Forest in southern Monterey County.

The blaze started Wednesday night and burned in steep, mountain terrain in the Ventana Wilderness Area, about 20 miles west of King City.

The fire was about 25 percent contained late Thursday. Full containment was not expected for several days.

Officials said no homes were threatened, but said there was still concern about structures to the south and east if significant winds developed.

Roads into the Arroyo Seco Recreation Area were closed Thursday.

Officials said more than 200 firefighters are battling the blaze. In addition to ground crews, the fire is also being fought from the air with helicopters and air tankers.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
