Plans are in the works for an expanded Monterey County Youth Museum -- a place where parents and children can learn and play together.

Officials said "MY Museum" has outgrown its current facility on Cannery Row in Monterey and that preparations are under way to move to a larger facility on Washington Street. The new location could be ready as soon as next spring.

"We really worked hard on the design and the phases of the museum to make sure that it's a first-class, wonderful facility that really represents all of Monterey Country -- and now we just need the funding to make this dream become a reality," MY Museum spokeswoman Lauren Cohen said.

A $3 million capital campaign will run over the next three to five years to build out the new museum.

Officials said the Monterey County Youth Museum attracts 22,000 visitors a year -- most of them from the surrounding communities.

Fund-rasing efforts with individual large donors are already under way. A public campaign will be launched in the future.
