SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- A Santa Cruz man has been charged in federal court for his role in allegedly sending around some anthrax hoax letters. The charges are a result of an investigation by the FBI, the Santa Cruz Police Department, and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department.
Paul Charles Steeves was arrested on Monday. On Jan. 18 and 19, the FBI office in Watsonville, a probation office in Oakland and a rehab center in Berkeley each received letters signed by Steeves. The envelopes also contained a white powdery substance. On Friday, authorities executed a state search warrant on Steeves home in Santa Cruz. Officers found a bag of Arm and Hammer baking soda, which was about half-empty. Authorities said Steeves will remain in custody and will appear before a magistrate in Oakland on Jan. 27 for a detention hearing. He could facce as mush as five years in prison and a fine of $250,000, for each offense, plus restitution, if appropriate if he convicted.
