HOLLISTER, Calif. -- The annual Independence Day motorcycle rally in Hollister attracted a much smaller crowd than usual, officials reported.

The event, which was officially canceled by local leaders, still attracted more than 5,000 bikers.

Tens of thousands of bikers usually make the annual trek to the Hollister rally, which gained fame in the Marlon Brando movie "The Wild One."

This year, the city of Hollister canceled the official rally because the event was seen as too expensive and dangerous to put on.

However, officials did end up hiring extra security for the weekend. Police arrested at least 69 people.
