SALINAS, Calif. -- A preliminary hearing for a Salinas woman accused of injected women with fake botox and killing one of them resumed on Thursday.Prosecutors said Martha Vasquez to her clients she was using botox but it was really cooking oil, and that a Castroville woman died shortly after receiving one of the injections.Investigators David Luna testified that he interviewed Vasquez and asked her if she knew that the injections she was giving were harmful and that Vasquez answered "no."
Luna said Vasquez also told him that the only thing she cared about was making women beautiful. Also Thursday, it was revealed that one of Vasquez's clients was a transgender male who, along with several women, sought buttock augmentation from Vasquez. Instead, they experienced health problems."She didn't remember much after that she passed out and woke up several days later and found herself in the hospital," Luna said, referring to the transgender client. The purpose of the preliminary hearing is to determine if there is sufficient evidence to try Vasquez for second-degree murder. The prosecution has presented all of its witnesses. The hearing will resume next month, at which time the defense may ask to present its own witnesses.Vasquez remains in custody with her bail set at $1 million. She faces life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder.
