SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Voters in and around Felton will consider Measure O, an $18.9 million bond measure that if passed would pay for a new library and other facilities. In 2006, a fire destroyed the San Lorenzo Valley High School library.Arsonists were charged with the crime, but San Lorenzo Valley teachers were left wondering why the fire was started.
Measure O backers said they hope voters will help pay for a new library to replace the burned out shell of the old one."This is an opportunity to serve, with better modern facilities, the students who attend the school, which now stands at 1,500 (students)," one supporter said.A small, temporary classroom now serves as a library. Insurance money paid for that.Measure O calls for the classroom to be replaced by a 10,000-square-foot library, with separate rooms for both high school students and for students attending the intermediate school next door. The measure would also fund the building of a new theater and science and computer labs, which would also allow for more space for the arts and vocational education.Property owners said they are wondering what it will cost them, and supporters of Measure O said it would not cost more than $20 per $100,000 of assessed value, meaning the average homeowner in the San Lorenzo Valley would pay $49 per year."I've heard the analogy that the cost of the bond will be about the same as buying two pizzas a year," a supporter said. The San Lorenzo Valley Property Owner's Association said it is against the measure, and they said renters should also pay for the measure as well as homeowners. They also said they are still paying for previous bond measures.School officials said that before the fire, the library held about 17,000 books. They said that now, there is about half that.Measure O would need voter approval of 55 percent to pass because it is a bond measure.
