DNC BLOG: Monday Night At The Convention

POSTED: 10:53 am PDT August 26, 2008

Last night was surely unforgettable with the two key speeches by Senator Ted Kennedy and Michelle Obama. Everyone was raving about both speeches afterwards. Michelle's speech was smooth, eloquent and powerful. The ending with Senator Obama appearing live on video with his two daughters came across very genuine and was touching. I was fortunate to be about only 20 feet away from Michelle Obama just behind the first line of photojournalists snapping away during her entire speech. I took several photos of her during her speech.

Everyone was amazed at Ted Kennedy's appearance due to the health concerns by his doctor and his ongoing battle with brain cancer. He received a standing ovation after a wonderful introduction by his niece Carolyn Kennedy. Senator Kennedy looked good and like always gave an outstanding speech. No wonder many say he is the best orator in the Senate. I was about to give a live interview with KSBW just as Carolyn Kennedy started speaking, but we instead decided to wait after this highly anticipated moment of Senator Kennedy's speech.

We heard speeches all day starting at 3pm and ending at 9pm on a lot of important topics impacting Americans across our country, including our economy, health care, reforming NCLB, protecting our environment and moving towards alterative energy- to name a few. But the room was filled with so much excitement that time seemed to go by really fast. We also saw music artist John Legend debut his new song, "If you are out there," with the Agape Choir of Los Angeles. Again I got to move up close to see his performance, and was asked to do a short PR interview for the choir. Also, on the floor, you saw every famous news anchor including Wolf Blitzer, Ted Koppel, Anderson Cooper and Katie Kuric. The California delegates are sitting just behind their interviewing stations. I even snapped a photo of Katie Kuric speaking to WWE Wrestling Champion Shelton Benjamin.

It was great sitting at our California delegates section. I got a front row seat in our California section along with my two fellow delegates and new friends, James Moore of Rialto and Kathleen Harmond of San Diego. I met a lot of other California delegates and was able to speak a little to civil rights leader Dolores Huerta and California Party Chairman Art Torres, who was our keynote speaker at a fundraising dinner in Watsonville in 2006. Actress Susan Sarandon was also spotted mingling with the California delegates at the upper levels.

At the end of the night, all the delegates headed towards the buses to head back to the hotels. I sat next to an official from Norway's Office of the Environment who came just see see Monday's speeches. It took about an hour to get back home since some of the streets were blocked off due to ongoing protests in the streets. Our hotel, the Sheraton Denver, was also closed off for about 4 hours before we returned due to the protest. Afterwards ,we went to several celebrations, including the one hosted by Senator Diane Feinstein for California delegates and then to another reception hosted by the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO). We were able to meet and network with delegates from Texas, New York, Minnesota, and other states.
