DNC BLOG: Delegates Held Back By Budget Delay Roll Call

Sen. Barack Obama To Speak Tonight

POSTED: 10:20 am PDT August 28, 2008
UPDATED: 11:16 am PDT August 28, 2008

Thursday morning, California delegates got to hear from several mayors, including LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. Villaraigos and Newsom are expected to square off in a gubernatorial race in 2010 along with California Attorney General Jerry Brown and California Lt. Governor John Garamendi. We were also able to hear from Willie Brown who was the longest serving legislator in the history of California. He fired up the crowd and encouraged delegates to help Barack Obama win in November.

I have to leave early this morning to try to get a good spot at the INVESCO Center for one of the most historic moments in the history of our country and the Democratic Party. I am very excited of course and it will be even more memorable since it falls on the anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I have a Dream" speech. Okay, I am now heading out the door. I'll send photos of today's events hopefully tonight or tomorrow morning.

Wednesday Night At The Convention

It was another memorable night. I was able to sit right next to civil rights leader Dolores Huerta and it was a good place to be since so many people stopped to say hello to Dolores. There were so many unforgettable moments and I took a few snapshots of the events from where we were sitting. Former President Bill Clinton gave an awesome speech as did Senator Joe Biden.

Also, the nominations for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama started early at the convention. Dolores Huerta nominated Hillary Clinton and there were several others nominating Barack Obama. Then the DNC secretary started going down the roll call, state by state, to ask for the number of votes each state made for Clinton and Obama. When it came to California, State Party Chairman Art Torres passed. Many reporters came up to us asking why?
"From what I knew, not all the California delegates had voted and we were still tracking down some people. In addition, the alternates were able to come and vote since many of the state legislators who were delegates were not present due to being called back to Sacramento for budget negotiations. Both Assemblyman John Laird and Assemblywoman Anna Caballero of the Monterey Bay were impacted by this and unfortunately, could not be here. Hopefully, they will be able to attend on Thursday."

There were again many celebs and notable persons at last night's convention including actor Jammie Foxx, former CA Governor Gray Davis, former U.S. Housing Secretary Henry Cisneros and former NBA basketball star Kevin Johnson, who is now running to be Sacramento's next mayor.

There was also an anti-Obama protester who came in posing as a journalist and held up a sign very briefly stating "Europeans Against Obama" near the California delegates. However, he was quickly escorted out because he was not even allowed to be on the floor of the convention with the pass he somehow obtained. Just shows you what security has to deal with here.

After the big events at the conventions, I headed to the VotoLatino celebration that was sponsored by actress Rosario Dawson of "Sin City", Wilmer Valderrama of the the "70s Show", Actress Jessica Alba and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. I networked with several delegates, Convention volunteers, and union members from Denver, Minnesota and other states. It was a great thing since they were able to get a Convention pass for Thursday's Barack Obama speech for a friend of mine who came with me. And they have a great section up close. I was also able to say hello to Rosario Dawson, who gave a great speech about young Latinos getting out to vote and also the need to run for office in their communities. It allowed me to see an entirely different side of these actors who are trying to do their part get more young people and Latinos to engage in the political process and make a difference in their communities.
