JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- One family experienced something bizarre Tuesday evening that still has them upset the next day.
A naked man who police said was high on drugs was trying to get into people's cars along Southside Boulevard. The man jumped on the hood of the family's SUV, banging on the windshield.
The driver, who asked not to be identified, said that he drove away, hoping to shake the man off the car. Instead, the man climbed onto the truck's roof as it moved through traffic.
"It was very traumatic for the family," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Paul Restivo said. "They did not know what to do. That's why they were afraid to stop."
The people in the vehicle, which included a 3-year-old girl, were on the phone with 911 while they drove, trying to decide what to do.
John Hewitt was sitting in his car when he looked up and saw the SUV drive by.
"Then I noticed there is a kid on top of it. And I'm looking and I go 'what the heck,' and the kid has no clothes on and he is standing up on the back and he acting like he is surfing," John Hewitt said Wednesday. "As soon as I made the light, I go up about a quarter of a mile and I see the kid lying in the road."
Police say the man rode all the way to Phillips Highway before falling off. He was only slightly injured, but doctors that examined him found drugs in his system..
Police still list the man as John Doe. He's still in the Duval County jail, charged with a sex crime.
