Question: On my next Vegas trip, I want to get the tackiest Vegas souvenirs I can find as gifts for friends. Any suggestions on what I should buy and where I can find them?
Laverne in Memphis, Tenn.
Answer: Your very first stop, Laverne, should be at Bonanza Gift Shop. That's the big place at the corner of Sahara and the Strip, across from the Sahara hotel. Its bills itself as the "World's Largest Gift Shop," and whether or not that's true, it has a ton of Vegas souvenirs of every stripe and color.
You should also head downtown to Fremont Street, where you'll find a bunch of smaller, tacky souvenir stores that will probably fit your bill.
For the most part, I'd stay away from the gift shops in the hotels. Not only are things more expensive, they are usually a little more tasteful.
As far as what to get ... Tacky is in the eye of the beholder. But my personal tacky favorites are Las Vegas snow globes (think about it for a minute), dice clocks (where the numbers on the clock are represented by dice), Las Vegas salt and pepper shakers, and any kind of souvenir spoon, unless you're getting the gift for someone who actually collects souvenir spoons.
Trust me when I tell you that once you arrive in one of these places, the question will not be, "Can I find something tacky?" but, "How do I choose from all of these tacky things?"
