Bonds' Quest For History Continues Against Washington
(Sports Network) - Barry Bonds has six games left on this current homestand if he wants to break Hank Aaron's all-time home run record in front of his home crowd. Bonds will once again lead the San Francisco Giants when they resume a four-game series versus the Washington Nationals this evening at AT&T Park.Bonds tied Aaron with his 755th career home run on Saturday against the San Diego Padres, but then rested in Sundays series finale. In Monday's 3-2 win in 11 innings, Bonds went 0-for-3 with a walk and Randy Winn provided the heroics with an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning. Winn ended with four hits and Bengie Molina knocked in a pair of runs, as the Giants halted a three-game losing streak. Starter Tim Lincecum did not record a decision after he hurled seven strong innings of one-run ball. Brad Hennessey earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief.
Bonds owns 296 career homers in San Francisco, including 156 at AT&T Park. If Bonds fails to go deep in the next three games against Washington, he will have three more home games to break the hallowed mark against his former club, the Pittsburgh Pirates Barry Zito will take the ball for San Francisco tonight and he is 8-10 with a 5.08 ERA in 23 games (22 starts) this season. Zito made his first-ever relief appearance on Sunday because starter Noah Lowry lasted only three innings during the 5-4 loss. Zito pitched a perfect inning against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. The left-hander is 2-2 in his last four decisions and last started on August 2 against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez Ravine, hurling 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball in a 4-2 triumph. Zito faced Washington just once in his career and was handed the loss on June 7 of the 2005 season as a member of the Oakland Athletics. Zito allowed two runs and five hits in six innings during a 2-1 loss at RFK Stadium. The Nationals had their season-high six-game winning streak come to an end with yesterdays extra-inning affair. Dmitri Young homered and finished with two RBI for Washington, which got a solid pitching performance from rookie John Lannan. Lannan took care of Bonds and permitted one run and eight hits in seven innings of work. Mike Bacsik gets the nod tonight for the Nationals and he is 5-6 with a 4.19 ERA in 14 starts this season. Bacsik has won three straight starts and is unbeaten over the previous four trips to the mound. In his last outing on August 2 against Cincinnati, Bacsik earned the win with seven decent innings and yielded three runs and three hits. The left-hander, who has lasted at least five innings in eight consecutive starts, faced the Giants once in his career as a member of the New York Mets on August 22, 2002. Bacsik gave three runs in 5 1/3 innings of a 3-1 loss in San Francisco. Bonds went 0-for-2 and was hit by a pitch against Bacsik that day. San Francisco and Washington, both last-place teams in their respective divisions, are meeting for the first time since the Nationals won five of six games during the 2006 campaign.
