Indiana Survives 2-OT Scare In Illinois

Hoosiers 83, Illini 79

Indiana freshman Eric Gordon overcame a shaky shooting night Thursday to score 19 points, and the 14th-ranked Hoosiers survived, 83-79, against Illinois in double-overtime.

Gordon forced the initial overtime period with a game-tying three late in regulation, and ultimately silenced an Illinois crowd that booed him unmercifully throughout his much-anticipated first visit to Champaign.

Gordon, the Big Ten's leading scorer, originally committed to the U of I while in high school, but rescinded that pledge after current Indiana head coach Kelvin Sampson took the job in Bloomington.

Armon Bassett had 16 points, including 11 in the second OT, and D.J. White added 16 and nine rebounds for the Hoosiers (19-3, 8-1 Big Ten), winners of two straight following a two-game slide.

Illinois got a career performance from its own freshman, as Demetri McCamey poured in a season-best 31 points, hitting seven three-pointers. Shaun Putt had 13 points and seven boards for the Illini (10-14, 2-9), but missed four separate potential go-ahead free throws that ultimately cost Illinois its third straight contest.

Down as many as 12 in the second half, Indiana took its first lead since early in the second half when Gordon hit a pair of free throws to make it 60-59 with just over two minutes to go in regulation.

A blocked shot by Calvin Brock led to McCamey's go-ahead bucket in transition with 56 seconds on the clock, and after Lance Stemler missed on a three, Chester Frazier hit a pair from the line to push Illinois' lead to 63-60 with 40.6 ticks on the clock.

Indiana worked the ball around the perimeter at the other end, but couldn't find a high-percentage look. Gordon settled for a three-pointer from about 25 feet away, which banked home to tie the game with 23 seconds remaining.

Putt was fouled on Illinois' potential game-winning possession, but missed the front end of a one-and-one, and when Crawford's desperation heave was short, the contest went to overtime.

Crawford hit back-to-back threes to put IU up 69-66 in the extra session, but McCamey answered with his own triple to tie it back up with under a minute to go. Ellis missed a pair of potential go-ahead free throws for Indiana, but Putt blew a chance to win it for the Illini, clanging a pair from the line with 2.2 seconds remaining.

White appeared to be fouled by Putt as he attempted a shot from three- quarters of the court with time expiring, but instead of getting three free- throw attempts to try and win it, a no-call forced a second OT.

Bassett hit a three to put the Hoosiers up 74-71 in the second overtime, then proceeded to sink six straight free throws down the stretch to seal it for IU, despite the efforts of McCamey, who continued to keep the Illini in it.

Crawford finished with 18 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting for the Hoosiers, while JaMarcus Ellis had nine points and 11 rebounds.

Gordon struggled from the floor out of the gate, and Illinois staked itself to a 19-14 lead in the opening 10-plus minutes. Crawford got a bucket in transition and then drilled a three from the left wing, tying the game at 21 with just over six minutes left in the half. But Illinois regrouped, heading into the locker room on an 8-4 spurt to take a 29-25 lead at the break.

McCamey hit back-to-back threes early in the second half and Putt scored in the lane, completing a 10-0 run that gave Illinois a 42-30 lead with 16:33 left.

Gordon hit his second three of the half to trim the margin to 52-45, and Indiana continued to hang around, with White leaking for a transition bucket and Gordon hitting two free throws to make it 54-49 with just over seven minutes to go.

Crawford's three from the left corner brought the Hoosiers within 56-54 with 5:43 remaining, but McCamey answered with his own triple, pushing the Illinois advantage back to five.

Game Notes

Illinois shot 8-for-17 from the foul line on the night, with Putt hitting just 1-of-7; the Illini are now 0-6 against ranked opponents on the season...Gordon had one first-half point, shooting 0-for-4 from the floor; he finished the night just 3-for-13 shooting...IU snapped a six-game skid in Champaign...Illinois point guard Frazier, who bottled up Gordon for most of the first half, went down late in regulation with an ankle injury and played sparingly the rest of the way.
