Detroit, MI -- (Sports Network) - Aaron Cunningham drove in a pair of runs as the Oakland Athletics downed the Detroit Tigers, 5-2, in the finale of a three- game set at Comerica Park. Ryan Sweeney and Jack Cust each hit a solo home run in the first inning for the Athletics, who have won four of their last five. Sean Gallagher, who was activated off the disabled list before the game, went four innings in the start and gave up no hits with six walks and six strikeouts before being pulled on pitch count. Huston Street (6-5) got the win for pitching a scoreless seventh. Ryan Raburn drove in both the runs while Armando Galarraga (12-6) got the loss for giving up five runs on eight hits in four innings of work for the Tigers, who have lost four of seven.Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 4, New York 2 Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Robb Quinlan's two-run single in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as the LA Angels of Anaheim downed the New York Yankees, 4-2, and cliched the American League West title. The Angels' earned a share of the crown with the win and then wrapped up their fourth division title in five years outright when second-place Texas fell in Seattle, 8-7. Garret Anderson finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Angels, who have won three of their past four contests. Vladimir Guerrero was also 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Dustin Moseley (2-4) allowed two runs on three hits in five innings to pick up the win. Kevin Jepsen, Jose Arredondo, Scot Shields and Francisco Rodriguez finished things from there by combining for four innings of scoreless relief. Rodriguez earned his 56th save, just one off the big league record recorded by Bobby Thigpen of the Chicago White Sox in 1990. Jason Giambi was 1-for-2 with an RBI for the listless Yankees, who managed just four hits and have dropped five of their last seven games. Andy Pettitte (13-13) was touched for four runs -- three earned -- on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings en route to losing his fourth straight start.
Final Score: Seattle 8, Texas 7 Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Raul Ibanez finished 4-for-5 and drove in three runs as Seattle edged Texas, 8-7, in the finale of a brief two-game set at Safeco Field. With the loss and an LA Angels win over the New York Yankees earlier in the day, the Rangers were officially eliminated from the AL West race. Ichiro Suzuki also went 4-of-5 and scored three runs for the Mariners, who have won two of their last three games. Kenji Johjima added a two-run single. Cesar Jimenez got a spot start on the hill and threw three shutout innings, allowing just one hit. Roy Corcoran (5-0) got the win after hurling 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Nelson Cruz, Taylor Teagarden, Hank Blalock and Chris Davis all homered for the Rangers, who have dropped two of three. Kevin Millwood (9-9) surrendered seven runs -- five earned -- on 11 hits in five-plus innings en route to the loss. Final Score: Cleveland 7, Baltimore 1 Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Scott Lewis was brilliant in his major league debut and Kelly Shoppach belted a pair of homers as Cleveland bested Baltimore, 7-1, in the third test of a four-game series at Camden Yards. Lewis (1-0), who was starting in place of Anthony Reyes and spent most of the season at Double-A Akron, hurled eight shutout innings and allowed just three hits while striking out three for the Indians, who won for the 13th time in 15 tries on the road. Asdrubal Cabrera finished 2-for-3 and drove in three runs for Cleveland. Aubrey Huff was 1-for-4 with an RBI double for the floundering Orioles, who have dropped 10 of 11 and 15 of their last 17 games. Chris Waters (2-3) surrendered five runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings to pick up the loss. Final Score: Tampa Bay 4, Boston 2 (14 innings) Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Carlos Pena's three-run home run in the 14th inning lifted Tampa Bay over Boston, 4-2, in the finale of a three-game set from Fenway Park. After Javier Lopez fanned Gabe Gross to start the frame, Mike Timlin (4-4) was called on and got Jason Bartlett on a groundout. Akinori Iwamura and Rocco Baldelli hit consecutive singles, setting the stage for Pena, who lofted his 28th homer of the season just over the Green Monster. The Sox loaded the bases in their final at-bat but only cashed in on a Kevin Youkilis sacrifice fly before Jason Hammel shut the door by striking out Jason Bay and inducing a lazy fly out from Alex Cora. Willy Aybar knocked in the other run for the Rays, who took two of three in the series and boosted their lead over Boston in the AL East to 2 1/2 games. Trever Miller (2-0) got the win by hurling a scoreless 13th inning. Hammel picked up his first save. Starter Andy Sonnanstine lasted seven innings, allowing four hits and one unearned run with seven strikeouts and no walks. Dustin Pedroia drove in an early run for the Red Sox, who have dropped two straight games. Josh Beckett yielded six hits and one run over six frames in his start, fanning seven with two walks. Final Score: Minnesota 7, Kansas City 1 Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Kevin Slowey hurled seven solid innings as Minnesota downed Kansas City, 7-1, in the middle test of a three-game series at the Metrodome. Slowey (12-9) allowed just one run on four hits for the Twins, who have won the first two games in this set and remained one game behind Chicago in the AL Central. The White Sox bested Toronto, 6-5, on Wednesday. Boof Bonser and Craig Breslow finished things with an inning of scoreless relief apiece. Alexi Casilla and Jason Kubel both went 3-for-4 for Minnesota. David DeJesus had the only RBI for the Royals, who have dropped three straight. Kyle Davies (6-7) surrendered four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings en route to the loss. Final Score: Chicago 6, Toronto 5 Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - A.J. Pierzynski knocked in three runs as Chicago nearly wasted a five-run lead but clipped Toronto, 6-5, in the third installment of a four-game set from U.S. Cellular Field. Jim Thome, Jerry Owens and Brian Anderson knocked in a run each for the White Sox, who snapped a three-game slide and lead Minnesota by one game in the AL Central. The Twins topped the Royals, 7-1, later Wednesday. Starter Mark Buehrle (13-11) got the win by scattering seven hits and a run over 7 1/3 innings, fanning six with two walks. Alex Rios hit a two-run homer for the Blue Jays, whose 10-game win streak came to an end. Marco Scutaro, Jose Bautista and Lyle Overbay each drove in a run as Toronto's comeback fell short. Jays ace Roy Halladay (18-10) had an unusually poor outing, allowing nine hits and five runs over six full frames. He struck out eight and walked one but lost for the first time since August 9.
