Problem Knocks Out Major Web Sites For Hour
POSTED: 11:49 a.m. EDT May 24, 2004
A company that brings content from many of the biggest sites on the web to customers had a problem Monday morning that left many sites down for more than an hour.
A software problem at a company called Akamai left users unable to get to sites such as eBay, Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft, MSNBC and KSBW.com.
The sites were down for one hour and 23 minutes, starting just after 8 a.m. Eastern time.
The company blamed a software glitch that cleans out temporarily stored content.
Akamai's network places servers with each of its clients, then caches the content the first time it's requested. The end result is faster delivery of webpages for users.
Akamai's corporate Web site says that the company delivers about 15 percent of the total traffic on the World Wide Web. It has more than 1,000 clients.
The company is based on Cambridge, Mass.
